Approach

  • If you took Psych-101 in high school or college, you’ve heard about “attachment theory.” We are highly invested in the clients and families we work with, and as such we will emotionally “attach” to one another.” This starts in the first phone-call.

“Do I trust this person?” is your north star in this call. Be yourself. If yourself needs to vent for 10-minutes straight and ask for a virtual hug, please do. If yourself is reserved and likes to ask a lot about research and credentials, please do. This call sets the tone for our work together, and we take it seriously.

  • If we have a waitlist, it will probably be one of the first topics that we bring up in the consult. This is not a ploy to “get rid of you,” it’s a trauma and attachment-informed therapy intervention. No one in the world is entitled to your story and you do not need to be sharing it with anyone you don’t want to share it with, including doctors. Please regulate your energy and ask us for our (terrific) referrals if your needs are more immediate than our waitlist can accommodate.

  • A healing intake involves turning over every relevant stone in your history. While this looks different for every person, we will go over medical, risk factors, mental health and family history with every single person. Apart from that information, we want to know what matters to YOU in therapy or testing! Please interrupt and correct us, if you feel like anything we heard was incorrect. We’re only human and telling the doctor/therapist when they’re wrong is often a very healing aspect of our work together.

  • At the end of the day, even very young children have the insight necessary to direct their own therapy. We find the best results happen with individuals and families that are willing to place trust in themselves and in their family members. It’s typically a big ask, as the individuals we work with are often engaging in challenging behaviors. Neurodevelopmental diagnosis are confusing and complex; trauma or major life changes; and highly sensitive temperaments, anxiety or other intuitive conditions. Whatever’s going on, we support you unconditionally. Sessions involve continuous consultation, feedback, education and tons of positive reinforcement.

You might actually be doing a good job already. I’m not going to say you’re doing things ‘wrong’ when you’re actually pretty in tune with yourself or with your kid.
